Collection of conservation photography
''Through my lens: a journey of conservation and connection''
As I embarked on my journey as a photographer, I made a promise to approach my photographs with the utmost respect for the environment and its inhabitants. Every photograph I take is a reflection of this commitment to ethical photography – a commitment to observe, not disturb; to capture, not intrude. But my work goes beyond simply capturing striking images. It is a testament to the urgency of conservation, a call to action in the face of mounting environmental challenges. My wildlife photos are captured in an ethical manner, respecting the natural behaviours and habitats of the subjects. I have never engaged in any harmful activities that jeopardise the well-being of wildlife, ensuring my photography contributes positively to their conservation. The close-up photos serve solely for research, revealing the reality of these activities without contributing to the industry or for personal pleasure.
Cultivating Consciousness: Understanding Your Souvenir Purchases
Owning a collection of souvenirs from your travels adds a special touch to your home, but it's crucial to be mindful of what you're bringing back. By choosing ethically sourced souvenirs, you're guaranteed a unique piece that holds personal value and enhances your home decor while commemorating your journey. However, it's important to note that certain industries, such as those involving e.g., elephant tusks, conch shells, feathers (see photo) and endangered turtle shells, thrive on tourist demand despite their unethical and unsustainable practices. Purchasing such items may inadvertently support poaching and endangerment of rare species. Instead, consider opting for locally made garments crafted from sustainable materials like , which not only benefits local communities but also avoids harm to animals.
During my time in Suriname, I encountered a troubling sight: a deceased howler monkey (see photo below). his unfortunate discovery shed light on the pervasive issue of bushmeat hunting in the region. The consumption of bushmeat not only jeopardises the survival of wildlife but also perpetuates a cycle of environmental degradation and biodiversity loss. It is essential to recognise the detrimental impact of participating in the bushmeat market, as purchasing such meat directly contributes to the exploitation of vulnerable species and the degradation of natural habitats.
