About me

The journey to becoming a wildlife photojournalist

Hello, I’m Susanne van Kempen. My love for wildlife and nature has been a defining part of my life, thanks to my parents, who encouraged my appreciation for the outdoors. From a young age, I felt more at home in nature, gathering feathers, stones, and shells, rather than opting for nights out with friends.

How it all began:

Some of my earliest and fondest memories are of exploring the Veluwe with my father and sister, taking wildlife photos with my first compact camera, and enjoying family barbecues at our bungalow. I also cherish memories with my mother and sister, like our zoo visits, jeep safaris on vacation, and a shared fascination with Africa.

Over the years, I’ve discovered hobbies that inspire me profoundly—diving to explore underwater worlds, mountain biking through dense forests, and embarking on solo travels. When I journey alone, I seek raw, immersive experiences: sleeping in jungles with the sounds of wild chimpanzees, camping among hyenas and hippos, or sharing a house with a puff adder and the occasional tarantula. Each adventure reveals new insights about myself and the natural world, guiding me toward my path as a conservationist, explorer, and wildlife photographer.

To further pursue my passion, I conducted a journey of education, obtaining degrees in Ecology and Wildlife Conservation (MBO), Tropical Forestry (BSc), and a Master in Forest and Nature Conservation at Wageningen University and Research. With an optimistic outlook on life, I am driven to make a positive impact in the world of conservation. But my commitment to conservation doesn't end with the click of a shutter. I actively engage with local communities and conservation organisations, volunteering my time and expertise to support initiatives aimed at safeguarding endangered species and preserving their habitats.

My ultimate dream is to explore every corner of our planet and to become a National Geographic explorer and a wildlife photojournalist/photographer. I am determined to use my lens as a tool for advocacy, to raise awareness about environmental issues and inspire others to join the cause.

''It seems to me that the natural world is the greatest source of excitement; the greatest source of visual beauty; the greatest source of intellectual interest. It is the greatest source of so much in life that makes life worth living'' - David Attenborough
