Captured moments: a showcase of published photography & scientific work

Winner of Columbus Travel Magazine photo competition 2024

Columbus Travel edition 129 - The most popular destinations away from the crowds.

I won a prestigious photo competition with two of my photographs. One of the images was selected as the overall winner of the month (elephant), earning the 1st prize. The second photo (chimpanzee), while not the top winner, was still recognized for its quality and was featured in the magazine, giving it additional exposure.

Jury's verdict: "Our first reaction upon seeing this submission was: wow. Getting so close to such a majestic animal is remarkable in itself, but capturing it so beautifully is another achievement altogether. You can almost physically feel how large and powerful the elephant is, and how small you feel standing next to it. This is something you want to experience"

Title: Migratory vertebrates shift migration timing and distributions in a warming Arctic

Summary:

Climate warming in the Arctic has led to earlier springs and a shift in the availability of food resources, affecting migratory animals. To adapt, these animals are expected to migrate earlier and move further north. A review of the literature shows that marine mammals are notably shifting their distributions northwards, while terrestrial birds and mammals, including polar bears, are adjusting their migration timing. However, many bird species face habitat limitations when moving further north. There are significant knowledge gaps, particularly regarding autumn migration and distribution changes in marine mammals, due to a lack of long-term studies.
